When remarking yesterday that it would take some amazing press wizardry from Congressman Bill Sali's spokesman, Wayne Hoffman, to make anything good out of Sunday's Idaho Press Tribune editorial, who knew that the press wizardry would actually be so lame.
Hoffman tells the Politico blog Shenanigans (which should be read in its entirety):
"They took the entire matter out of context in my mind, and I worked for the Press-Tribune for four years," he said. "It borders on libel."
Apparently Hoffman's two hats (as campaign and staff spokesman) are pulled down just a little too tightly. Part of the IPT complaint was that he had worked for them before and they knew what a stickler for details he was, or used to be. They were shocked at how cavalierly he was taking matters.
Excusing your own ineptitude by attacking the messenger. Maybe this helps explain why the campaign seems to be flailing a bit.
Update: The unequivocal notion has similar thoughts and apparently beat me to them. Also read commentary from Kevin Richert of the Idaho Statesman here.
Update 18:38: The Sunlight Foundation Blog has picked up on the story saying in a post entitled "Epic Disclosure Fail":
Disclosure is not a joke. Rep. Sali should take public disclosure more seriously and perhaps figure out a way to train his staff on computer use.
And beyond that sister, is Hoffman implying that they should have treated his master better because of his previous association?

True. The thing that I really find hilarious about this whole dual-hat thing is the thought of Hoffman trying to juggle however many different cell phones, and step in and out of the office to handle matters depending on whether they are campaign or congressional staff related. I can't imagine that he actually steps out on the sidewalk every time he gets a campaign related phone call. And is he really using different laptops, one for campaign and one for staffer?
This sort of brings to mind his anonymous blogging at the Idahoan (that mysteriously disappeared once the attention had dwindled some), only this time he's not trying to hide much.

Bill Sali's lack of ability to file disclosure using a computer explains Larry Craig's response to Pass223 "'not everyone has a computer'(?)." Maybe Mr. Sali has a secret. http://pass223.com/call/30/
