I'm going to take a stab at a prediction for the vacant District 13 House seat. I'm predicting that Governor Otter will skip over the first choice of the Canyon County Republicans and choose Ronalee Linsenmann for the appointment. My thinking is that he'll make that choice due to his support for the bill being proposed by Sen. John McGee (R-Caldwell) denying government services to illegal residents. Ex-Canyon County Commissioner Robert Vasquez is well known for his stance on illegal immigration and as his campaign manager, Ronalee Linsenmann would surely fit into Gov. Otter's efforts to quell illegal immigration statewide.
Any of the three candidates will be more conservative than the former Rep Bill Deal and no matter who the governor chooses, he or she will have to do some catching up as the legislative session is already in its second week. I'm sure the Gov. won't keep us waiting for long.
Update 01.16.07: The Idaho Statesman is reporting that Gov. Otter has appointed Steve Kren for the District 13 seat. The Statesman story reports, however, that he is the Nampa City Councilman but according to reports in the Idaho Press-Tribune the list of candidates included Stephen Kren Jr., the son of the city councilman, Stephen Kren Sr. In any event, Gov. Otter went the less controversial route with this appointment. We'll have to wait to see how this pick plays out for the District 13 voters.
Update 01.16.07 01:45: Otter's official announcement on his website is also reporting that Steve Kren is the Nampa City Councilman but the Statesman has removed that info from their story.
Update 01.16.07 02:00: Just received telephone verification from Nampa City Clerk's office that Stephen Kren Sr. is still the Nampa City Councilman and that the candidate for District 13 House seat is Stephen Kren Jr., his son. I wonder since Gov. Otter mentions in his official release the local government experience of the appointee, if he realizes which Kren he's actually appointed.
Update 01.16.07 02:10: According to an official with the Gov. office, they were unaware of the error and will be updating the press release shortly. My previous question still holds, however: Does the Gov. realize which man he has appointed?
Update 01.16.07 02:50: Here's a screen grab of the original press release from the Governor's office
Update 01.16.07 07:30: Otter's office seems unwilling to admit that the Gov. thought he was nominating a city councilman to the House. Eye on Boise is reporting that Otter communications director, Mark Warbis admitted that the press release mistakenly said Kren was a Nampa City Councilman but the report goes on to say
... Otter wasn’t confused about which Steve Kren he appointed – he appointed the son, who is under 30 and who was nominated by a party district committee.
So then why say this in the press release [emphasis added]:
"It will be good to have another voice of local government and the building trades in the Idaho House," Otter said."
Steve Kren Jr. has had no experience in local government other than being active in party politics and running for the House in District 13. According to the phone call I made at about 2:00 today, no one in the governor's office was even aware that Stephen Kren Sr. was the city councilman, not the appointee, Stephen Kren Jr. The Gov. should just come out and admit he made a mistake.
Zoiks. One misstep after another. I was wondering if the administration was going to get its act straight after the mistakes in the campaign. Guess not. How much is the work stop order on the Capitol expansion costing the taxpayer?

Yeah, I'm not sure we know yet what the temporary or eventual permanent halt on the addition is likely to cost.
On the mistake front, they appear unwilling to admit that the Gov. thought he was appointing a city councilman. It's not an earth shattering mistake, but why not just admit it.

So far, Otter seems a bit of a loose cannon. Maybe it's just initial growing pains.

Excellent catch!

You'd think after thirty years in politics Otter would be "all growed up" by now.

Thanks Bubblehead. Think anyone in MSM will care?
