Matthew Shepard was a mother's son. Saying, "No mother should have to go through what I have," in the more than ten years since his horrific murder in Wyoming, Judy Shepard has been on a quest urging the U.S. Congress to strengthen federal hate-crimes legislation.
That quest moved one step closer to reality yesterday when the Matthew Shepard Act was passed in the U.S. House of Representatives. This despite vigorous opposition from Republicans attempting to kill the bill and making outrageously false claims during debate, including—with his mother listening in the gallery—the assertion that naming the hate-crimes bill for the murdered gay man, Matthew Shepard, was all a hoax.
Similar legislation has been introduced in the Senate and, if passed, President Obama is expected to sign it into law.

What is worse are comments from NC Rep. Virginia Foxx who suggest that Matthew Shepard was the mere victim of a "robbery?" WTF???? Some people like her and Bert Stevenson don't have a friggin' clue.
