How long does it take a letter to get from Washington, D.C. to Nampa, Idaho? It's an odd question but maybe an important one. According to the House Ethics Manual:
Under statutory law and Committee on House Administration regulations, a Member is prohibited from spending official funds to make any unsolicited mass communication within 90 days of any election in which the Member‘s name is on the ballot.
With election day being November 4th this year, that makes the 90 day cutoff for sending taxpayer funded mass mailings August 6th. I received Congressman Bill Sali's latest mass mailing (blogged about here) on Friday, August 15th. I know of at least two 1st District voters who received the mailing after that date.
Does it take over 10 days for a letter to get from D.C. to Nampa, or did Congressman Sali violate the House Ethics Rules?

Here's my guess for his explanation -- he (or more likely his spokesman) will say they spent the funds to get the mailing printed up before the 90 day mark, so it's OK. Or, he'll claim you're a hate-mongering liberal. Anything but admit his staff screwed up again.

Why is it important that Sali is held accountable IF he violated the 90 day rule-
Well if it is not- then why do these rules exist? I don't care if it is one day or two weeks- the rules are established for a reason and for all to abide- when we stop holding elected officials accountable- it continues to erode the public trust. And what does that say to those that actually abide to the rules and regulations? They are simply chumps? Those abusing it- game the system...and get away with it?
Why is it news? Wasn't the greatest service of the press to inform the public? An informed public should always be desired. When things such as ethics are simply forgotten - or do not exist -we all lose. And let us not forget- there is a reason why Idaho was almost dead last when it came to ethics in government-
Idahoans deserve better- and we should all expect our elected officials to abide by such rules...and be guaranteed that the media will expose those when they fail to appreciate the importance. Those abusing their office, at times because of their own arrogance , need to be reminded who they are supposed to be serving...and who pays their salaries.
