The Idaho Democratic Party has issued a statement in response to comments made by Congressman Bill Sali regarding religious diversity in the U.S. and in Congress. [Read this earlier post for the story.]
From an IDP press release:
Democratic Party Chairman Richard Stallings is calling for 1st District Republican Bill Sali to either take back the anti-religious freedom comments he made this week to an online religious fundamentalist organization web site, or get out of Congress.
“I call upon Bill Sali to either publicly apologize to the Americans has insulted with his bigoted remarks, or resign his congressional seat and let someone who understands basic human dignity and the right of religious freedom to take his place,” Stallings said.
“Today, Bill Sali is belittling Hindus and Muslims. Tomorrow, will he do the same with Roman Catholics and Buddhists? Or perhaps Jews and Mormons? Who will pass the religious purity test and be able to serve in Congress; or even pray out loud in the nation’s Capitol?”
According to a story (and a recording of Sali’s voice) posted on OneNewsNow.com, Sali objected to an opening prayer in the U.S. Senate chamber last month that was led by a Hindu cleric. He also protested the fact that another member of the House of Representatives was a Muslim.
Here’s what Sali said:
“We have not only a Hindu prayer being offered in the Senate, we have a Muslim member of the House of Representatives now, Keith Ellison from Minnesota . Those are changes -- and they are not what was envisioned by the Founding Fathers,” asserts Sali.
Sali also said that the only way the U.S. can continue to survive is under that protective hand of God; and that a Hindu prayer addresses a “different god” and that "creates problems for the longevity of this country."
Stallings, himself a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, said Sali words showcase just how much of a bigot the congressman really is.
“Religious freedom is a bedrock value of America – it is one of our core tenants. And yet, here we have Bill Sali, a United States congressman, showing his disdain for people who belong to religions other than his own.”
“Either Sali is too dumb and insensitive to realize that his words are extremely hurtful to others or he really is a religious bigot. Either way, this man does not belong in the United States Congress,” Stallings said.

All you anti-Sali socialists are just afraid that Congressman Sali is going to defeat Pelosi's attempts to turn America over to the Muslims!

Well, BS Fan I was wondering when you were going to surface. I thought maybe you were embarrased by your congressman's recent statements but now I assume that you support Sali's anti-freedom of religion position.

Go SALI! Or for us Apple-ites: Go iLAS! (Sali backwards...).
I would vote for Sali a million times over..
Oh, and all those "African Americans" who's "heritage" is from 400+ years here in America, you ARE NOT "African". you are simply "American", and NATIVE at that (like me!).
For the record, I'm melanin-challenged; how's that for "politically correct".
Finally, diversity is good, not perversity.
