Rammell for Senate?
Well it appears that Idaho's 2008 Senate race will have a contested Republican primary. Friday, Eye on Boise reported that Rex Rammell plans to announce his 2008 candidacy for Senator Larry Craig's seat and he hopes his opponent will be Lt. Gov. Jim Risch.
Controversial eastern Idaho elk rancher Rex Rammell says he’ll announce on Tuesday that he’s going to run for the U.S. Senate – Larry Craig’s seat, to be exact. “Guess who is my likely opponent? Jim Risch,” he chortled over the phone. “We’re gonna go head-to-head in the primary.” Risch, a Republican, has said he’ll run for the seat if Craig decides not to seek re-election. Democrat Larry LaRocco – who faced off with Risch in this year’s lieutenant governor race – also is running.
Risch and Rammell have an adversarial relationship that would make for an interesting primary. Last year when many of Rammel's elk escaped from his inadequately fenced enclosure, then Gov. Risch ordered them shot to prevent breeding with, and potentially spreading disease to the wild elk population. Rammell was extremely upset with the order and was even arrested for obstruction while trying to prevent state officials from carrying out the order.
As of yet, Senator Craig has not announced whether he intends to seek another term.
